On January 15, the exchange meeting for the Sino-German key areas energy efficiency enhancement demonstration project (Sino-German Intelligent Manufacturing Center) was held in the Sino-German Demonstration Zone. The meeting focused on the practical application and project implementation of carbon-fixing concrete technology, bringing together representatives from leading organizations such as the National Energy Conservation Center (NECC), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the China Quality Certification Center (CQC), and the Jinyu Group. Through pragmatic exchanges, the meeting aimed to deepen Sino-German cooperation in energy efficiency.
During the meeting, the National Energy Conservation Center elaborated on the background and significance of the research on carbon-fixing concrete technology, emphasizing its key role in reducing carbon emissions in the construction sector. It highlighted the potential of this technology to enhance the energy efficiency and facilitate the low-carbon transformation of the Sino-German Intelligent Manufacturing Center. The German Agency for International Cooperation shared research findings on the application of carbon-fixing concrete by the Zhejiang Building Materials Group, providing valuable practical experience for pilot projects. Jinyu Group and Beijing Zhuzong New Building Materials Company introduced their achievements in the research and development of carbon-fixing concrete technology, as well as their experience in production, application, and related standards and specifications. They offered professional support from the perspectives of technology implementation and practical adaptation. The Sino-German Demonstration Zone outlined its green development positioning and detailed the service guarantee system for zero-carbon technology integration and resource collaboration between government and enterprises. Airport Development provided an update on the current progress of the Sino-German Intelligent Manufacturing Center project.
Subsequently, all parties engaged in in-depth discussions on key issues such as technical feasibility and implementation details. Based on the actual needs of the project, preliminary discussions were held on the application scenarios and implementation steps for carbon-fixing concrete technology.
This exchange represents an innovative approach and initiative in the green and low-carbon practices of the Sino-German Intelligent Manufacturing Center. Moving forward, the Sino-German Demonstration Zone will continue to explore new models for green and low-carbon development, injecting strong momentum into the realization of green development and the dual carbon goals.
Carbon-Fixing Concrete Technology
With the support and promotion of the National Energy Conservation Center, the German Agency for International Cooperation conducted the first round of research on the application of carbon-fixing ready-mix concrete in China in December 2015. This research preliminarily assessed the carbon-fixing potential, application costs, and promotion challenges of the technology.
China’s carbon-fixing concrete technology is currently in a transitional phase from research and development demonstrations to early industrialization. Its core principle involves using carbonation mineralization reactions to convert captured CO₂ into stable carbonates within concrete or cementitious materials, achieving permanent carbon storage. Each ton of concrete can sequester several kilograms to tens of kilograms of carbon, while also enhancing the material’s early strength, reducing cement usage, and delivering multiple benefits such as carbon sequestration, quality improvement, and emission reduction.
This technological pathway not only helps the cement industry build a carbon-closed-loop system and develop negative-carbon building materials but also adds green value to construction materials in the future carbon market environment. It serves as a critical technological support for promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of the building materials industry.
